The best Christmas adverts from 2020
We all know that the festive season is nearly upon us because the parade of Christmas adverts on our TV’s has begun! For marketers, it’s the most wonderful time of year, as world class advertising agencies work with the world’s biggest brands to show case their Christmas offering in the annual brand beauty parade.
So here are our favourites so far:
John Lewis
I mean, would it be Christmas without the John Lewis advert?!
John Lewis has become synonymous with Christmas. adam&eveDDB and John Lewis have taken note of the state of the world this year and have decided to use their ad to promote kindness. Using the hashtag #givealittlelove, the ad encourages us to carry out small acts of kindness to anyone who needs a hand in these difficult times.
Similar to their 2015 Christmas campaign, #manonthemoon, which drew attention to loneliness and pledged to raise money for Age UK, this year’s ad hopes to raise money for charities Fare Share (which helps people facing food poverty) and Home-Start (which works with parents who need support). John Lewis has committed to match all customer donations up to £2million.
Not only does the ad bring festive cheer, but it’s also doing a lot of good for so many that are struggling this year.
Coca-Cola
To celebrate 100 years of Coca-Cola Christmas advertising, Coca-Cola have opted for a heart-warming ad entitled, ‘The Letter’. The story follows one dad’s quest to deliver his daughter’s letter to Santa. The message to consumers is to ‘give something only you can give- yourself’.
The ad was created by Weiden + Kennedy London and is sure to give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Amazon
Amazon’s Christmas ad has kept its theme very current. In light of the current pandemic, all of our lives have been disrupted in some way. The ad follows a young ballerina who is preparing for the performance of a lifetime, but due to COVID, the performance is cancelled. Thanks to those close to her, the show goes on (albeit in a slightly different form).
The ad was created by Lucky Generals and features French ballerina Tais Vïnolo.
Greenies
The big brands mentioned so far have taken a very sentimental approach to their ad narrative. In contrast, Greenies have gone for a simple comedic approach. Created by adam&eveDDB (the same agency behind the John Lewis ad), Greenies show a short stop animation of a man making a snowman with his dog, who can’t resist the sticks that make the snowman’s arms.
The ad is simple but effective and employs amazing puppets created by Andy Gent. The ad is sure to make you chuckle.
Tesco
Our final pick of this year’s ads is Tesco’s. A very current ad that injects s bit of fun to the year we’ve all endured- Tesco’s ad points fun at the ‘small mishaps’ we’ve specifically had this year, such as giving a bad hair-cut or buying too much toilet paper, and declares that there is no naughty list year because we all deserve a treat this year.
The ad was created by BBH who have cleverly injected a bit of topical humour into the season.
